False Colours Part V

Kit tells Evelyn that he has fallen in love with Cressy and that she wants to marry him.. Evelyn confides that during his stay with the Askhams he has fallen seriously in love with their daughter Patience, who is beautiful, sweet and sensibly brought up. Kit believes that his brother has indeed formed a real attachment and that Patience will be a good wife, but he is concerned that his uncle will not consider this match good enough for Evelyn. There is still the problem of how to help their mother with her debts. Evelyn tells his brother that she owes about 20 thousand pounds which is a staggering figure. When Kit suggests that he should pay off Lady Denville's debts using the money that he has just inherited from his godfather, Evelyn refuses. He feels that as the elder son it is his obligation. The brothers decide to sleep on their problems, and try to sort things out the following day. Kit tells his mother and Cressy of Evelyn's return and Lady Denville manages to get rid of her brother Cosmo and his family.
