George Grossmith 1847-1912

George Grossmith is famous as a singer, actor, and writer who wrote Diary of a Nobody. He was the son of a journalist, who also did some entertaining. He orginally wanted to be a barrister but after his school days, he took up his father's profession for a time. He also began to do some entertaining, writing much of his own material, including songs. He got to know Gilbert and Sullivan and started to sing in the Savoy Operas, creating many of their most famous characterHe played Ko Ko in the Mikado and the Major General in the Pirates of Penzance. But he is probably now most famous for the Diary of a Nobody. It was a comic diary, by a lower middle class man, Charles Pooter who has just moved to a nice but small house in Holloway. Pooter works in the City as a senior clerk but he regards himself as a gentleman and frequently makes a fool of himself by insisting on his genteel status. But he is a good sincere man, devoted to his wife Carrie, and loving his exasperating and mildly wayward son Lupin. Lupin has started out working as a clerk also but has just lost his job through laziness. Charles manages to get him a job in his own company, but Lupin is fired. Pooter writes about the hobbies that were popular at the time, such as amateur dramatics, cycling, and Spiritualism. Eventually Lupin gets engaged, gets a better job and Pooter manages to get a contract for his firm that leads his boss to offer to buy the freehold of his house and give it to him. Pooter is overjoyed. George's wife died before him, and he died in 1912.

Fran Varady novels by Ann Granger

Ann Granger is a former diplomat who began to write historical novels. She lived in many countries and then returned to the UK. She has written several detective novels, using different characters, but one set that I particularly like is the Fran Varady novels. These are light detective fiction about an amateur detective called Fran Varady. Fran's family are Hungarian but have emigrated to London, and she was brought up in a one parent family. Her mother left her father when she was small and when he and her grandmother died, she was left homeless. This gives Fran access to the seedy side of London life. Unlike some detectives, she has very little in the way of position or worldly wealth. In the first novel, she is living in a squat and trying to support herself, when one of the other homeless girls kills herself. Fran investigates and finds that it was a murder. She gets odd jobs as a waitress or in a shop, but she wants to become an actress and tries to get into that world. However, her natural quick wit and sympathy for people leads her into investigating crimes and problems, and she meets her mother, before her mother dies. She likes living in London and is a feisty cheerful character. She has a good friend, Ganesh, whose family run various shops, and she works at times for small detective agencies......

Valley Saga final part

The disaster causes several deaths and the destruction of a lot of houses in the area, and Paul is desperately upset by losing Claire. Maureen tells him that Claire was ill and that her actions in saving Vanessa were heroic, in knowing that she was putting strain on her heart. He is touched and amazed. Andrew returns from America, realising that his actions in not taking care of the land, and selling property for quick profit, have caused his mother's death and that of several others, and while he is a hard man, he feels guilty. He returns to Shallowford and tells his former partner, Shawcrosse that he is going to insist that he sell back the farm that he bought a few years ago, which was part of the estate, or he will turn him in to the police. Shawcrosse is furious but has to agree. Andrew gets the farm put into his father's name, and goes to see him. He can see that he is still grieving for Claire, but he is pleased to see his son. He tells him how he has regained the farm and put it in Paul's name. He goes to see his wife, who has never tried to get a divorce or remarry and they have a long talk. They still have affection for each other, and decide to give the marriage another try, so Andrew moves back home.
